GOOG-411 : Some Facts

Google's new 411 service is free, fast and easy to use. Give it a try now and see how simple it is to find and connect with local businesses for free.

You don't need a computer, an Internet connection, or even the keypad on your phone or mobile device. GOOG-411 is voice-activated, so you can access it from any phone (mobile or land line), in any location, at any time. For free.

Dial (1-800) GOOG-411. Say where. Say what you're looking for. GOOG-411 will connect you with the business you choose.

If you are calling from a mobile device, GOOG-411 can even send you a text message with more details and a map. Simply say "Text message" or "Map it."

Overview: Which phones

GOOG-411 can be used from any personal or work phone, whether it is a fixed/landline phone, mobile phone or VoIP phone. However, calls from pay phones are currently not supported.

Keep in mind that features like the "text message" or "map it" commands will only work from a mobile phone.

Overview: Cost

It's free.

Google doesn't charge you for the information or for connecting you to the business you're looking for. Keep in mind, though, that your telephone company may apply regular charges for making a phone call or receiving an SMS.

In India Google (NSDQ: GOOG) launched SMS service back in October 2007. Google SMS Services include Local Search, Weather, Glossary, Movies, Q&A, Translation, Web Snippets, Calculator and Currency Conversion. Google is using the short code 54664 (5GOOG), and is currently offering local information for Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. SMS is priced at premium rates, and it is available through five operators - Aircel, Airtel, BPL, BSNL, Reliance.

Google also has included personalization features, as per which a frequently queried location is saved as a users default location. Thus, if no location is specified in an SMS, Google returns results based on that location. Google also powers search on Airtel Live.
