Google is getting into the broadband business.The company plans to deploy its own “experimental” fiber-optic network to at least 50,000 homes, perhaps as many as 500,000. The fiber-optic network will deliver speeds of 1 gigabit-per-second, which is more than 20 times faster than residential fiber optic services offered today in the U.S.

What is Google planning to build?

What criteria will Google use to select the communities for this project?

Above all, we're interested in deploying our network efficiently and quickly, and are hoping to identify interested communities that will work with us to achieve this goal. We also want to work with a community where we can bring significant benefits to residents and develop useful proofs-of-concept that can have a broader impact. For example, we're looking for opportunities to experiment with deployment techniques that can inform and accelerate broadband deployment elsewhere as well. To that end, we'll use our RFI to identify interested communities and to assess local factors that will impact the efficiency and speed of our deployment, such as the level of community support, local resources, weather conditions, approved construction methods and local regulatory issues. We will also take into account broadband availability and speeds that are already offered to users within a community. The RFI is a first step – we plan to consult with local government organizations, as well as conduct site visits and meet with local officials, before announcing our final decisions.

When does Google expect to announce a target community?

Why would consumers need 1 Gbps connections?

In the same way that the transition from dial-up to broadband made possible the emergence of online video and countless other applications, ultra high-speed bandwidth will drive more innovation – in high-definition video, remote data storage, real-time multimedia collaboration, and others that we cannot yet imagine. It will enable new consumer applications, as well as medical, educational, and other services that can benefit communities. If the Internet has taught us anything, it's that the most important innovations are often those we least expect.

When does Google expect to have a 1 Gbps network up and running?

Today's announcement is the first of many steps along the way. It's too early to announce a definite launch date, but our hope is to have a network up and running as soon as possible. Right now our focus is on finding the right communities for our trial.

What do you mean by "at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people?"

We have not yet determined the size of the trial, which will be based in large part on the availability of appropriate locations. We expect that we will provide this service to a minimum of 50,000 people and up to as many as 500,000 people, most likely in multiple communities.

Can I submit on behalf of a non-city municipality?

Yes, we will accept responses from any type of municipality including counties, military bases, reservations, etc. Please use the "local governments" link if you are a government or municipal official; otherwise please use the "residents and community groups" link.

Who is allowed to submit a response on behalf of a municipality?

Respondents should clearly state the position in which they represent their city. We encourage responses from city managers, elected officials, and mayors. If you do not represent your city, please submit a statement of interest for residents and community groups.

What if I don't have all the information needed to complete the RFI?

We are asking municipalities to provide as much information as possible about their location, but all submissions are welcome. Please fill in as many of the fields as you can and let us know of any special circumstances that might be affecting your submission.

Can we give Google a gift or visit your office?

We very much appreciate community enthusiasm for this project, but please note that Google cannot accept gifts, nor can we accommodate visits to our corporate headquarters or other offices.

Kochi is ready for IPL 2011!

A great news for all cricket lovers of Kerala. It's True....Kochi got an IPL team!.

The consortium from Kerala, Rendezvous Group, decided on Kochi as its base. Rendezvous Sports World Ltd emerged as the surprise package in the Indian Premier League's (IPL) bidding for two new teams. It won the rights for Kochi. The brain behind bringing together the five-member consortium was Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor. IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi said Tharoor helped Kerala to have a team of its own. Rendezvous Sports bid $333.33 million to get Kochi as the host city while Sahara Adventure Sports was the highest bidder at $370 million to bag Pune. The other groups that took part in the bidding were Adani and Videocon.

Pooja Gulati, director Rendezvous Sports World, said: "Cricket is now popular throughout India and it does not matter if Kerala is not known for cricket. The new IPL team will change that notion."

Modi said IPL will provide a venue till the stadium at Kochi comes up.
"Kerala Cricket Association is building a world class stadium. Till that is ready, IPL will provide an alternate venue."

The minimum base price is $225 m and the highest tender wins. The highest bid was of Sahara Adventure Sports Ltd for Pune was $370 million. The second highest was Rendezvous Sports Ltd $333.33 million and they bid for Kochi (Cochin). So the two new cities in the IPL are Pune and Cochin which will be part of the 4th season of the IPL (IPL 2011). They were bid for by Sahara Adventure Sports (Pune) and Rendezvous Sports Ltd (Cochin).

IPL season 4 will feature 10 teams and a total of 94 games will be played, from the existing 60.

twitter accounts of Britney Spears, Prez elect Barack Obama & other celebrities hacked!
Hackers have accessed the accounts of a series of celebrities on the popular micro-blogging site twitter and left a variety of pornographic and dubious messages and links.
For example, the hacker, purporting to be US newscaster Rick Sanchez, wrote: "I am high on crack right now might not be coming into work today."
In the most serious breach of security for the burgeoning blogging site, beloved of the tech community, hackers have targeted more than 30 accounts including those belonging to Britney Spears, Barack Obama, Facebook, CNN anchor Rick Sanchez and the Huffington Post. Twitter on Monday (Jan 5th 2009) said the hacker had broken into 33 accounts by gaining access to tools used by its support team.
"These accounts were compromised by an individual who hacked into some of the tools our support team uses to help people do things like edit the email address associated with their Twitter account when they can't remember or get stuck," wrote Twitter co-founder Biz Stone in a blog post. "We considered this a very serious breach of security and immediately took the support tools offline. We'll put them back only when they're safe and secure."
In the phishing attempt, scammers sent out email notifications purporting to be from Twitter that contained a link to a site "masquerading as the Twitter front page", wrote Stone in a blog post on Saturday. The object of the scam was to collect people's Twitter sign-in details, which would allow the phisher to send messages in the guise of the compromised user. In the event of a compromise, Stone said user passwords would automatically be reset and notification emails sent out.
According to the security company, thousands of Twitter members have reported receiving messages from friends inviting them to visit a website containing funny pictures, a blog and in some cases even the chance to win an Apple iPhone.
The hacking attack comes at a bad time for Twitter which is poised to break out of the tech community to become a mainstream social networking tool. Ev Williams, one of the site's founders, tweeted that the atmosphere at the office today was "focused anxiety".

GAudi : Google Audio Indexing

Google Audio Indexing is a new technology from Google that allows users to better search and watch videos from various YouTube channels. It uses speech technology to find spoken words inside videos and lets the user jump to the right portion of the video where these words are spoken.

Google Audio Indexing is also known as GAudi, is a widget for iGoogle, a beta product which indexes the audio of YouTube videos in the "politicians" channel.

Google's mission is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". As more video content is being created everyday, Google Audio Indexing tries to make it easier for people to find and consume spoken content from videos on the Web.

Google Audio Indexing is a showcase for speech technology. Political videos and election materials are a special case of broadcast news content, a domain that has received a lot of academic and industry attention and is known to perform well.

Google Audio Indexing uses speech technology to transform spoken words into text and leverages the Google indexing technology to return the best results to the user.

The returned videos are ranked based -- among other things -- on the spoken content, the metadata, the freshness.

GAudi is still in the experimental phase but it offers a glimpse as to what is to come for video search and the possibilities this brings for Video SEO. Speech-to-text offers video content publishers the opportunity to blow out video landing pages with relevant and keyword rich content.

An interesting point in all the GAudio talks is that GOOG-411, Google’s directory assistance service, is the technology that made the Google Audio Indexing possible or a least better. Back in late 2007, when GOOG-411 launched, Google said that it would be using the acquired service to improve speech-to-text technology

Searching for a word in a video will bring up a whole list of search results with hits for that particular word, along with a text snippet from the video where the word was mentioned to give the searcher an idea about the context. Google even takes it a step further by highlighting at which points in the video the keyword was mentioned.

Google Audio Indexing searches only those videos uploaded on the You Tube political channels. If a video is on the YouTube political channels, it will be in the index. Candidates control the video content released to the public using Google Audio Indexing technology by controlling the content they upload to YouTube channels.

Prototypes

Google announced its plans for the Android phone software in November 2007 with a declared aim of making it easier to get at the web while on the move. To help develop Android, Google also unveiled the Open Handset Alliance - a partnership of more than 30 firms that would work to make phone software easier to work with. The group includes operators such as Telefonica, handset makers such as HTC and Motorola as well as chip makers such as Intel and Qualcomm. Many of the partners demonstrated early prototype Android phones at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona in mid-February. The idea behind Android is to do for phone software what the open source Linux software has done for PCs. However, in launching Android, Google faces stiff competition from established players such as Nokia with its Symbian software and Microsoft with its Mobile operating system. Volvo Ocean Race In Cochin

The Volvo Ocean Race is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour which has been built on the spirit of great seafarers - fearless men who sailed the world’s oceans aboard square rigged clipper ships more than a century ago.

Their challenge back then was not a race as such, but recording the fastest time between ports. This meant new levels of pride for themselves and great recognition for their vessel.

The spirit that drove those commercial sailors along the web of trade routes, deep into the bleak latitudes of the Southern Ocean and around the world’s most dangerous capes, emerges today in the form of the Volvo Ocean Race, a contest now seen as the pinnacle of achievement in the sport.

The first edition of this sporting adventure came in the wake of two remarkable sailors of the last century, Sir Francis Chichester and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, men who drew worldwide acclaim for amazing solo voyages around the planet. Inevitably their success led to talk in international sailing circles of a race around the world for fully crewed yachts. It became a reality in 1973 with The Whitbread round the World Race, the longest, most demanding and perilous sporting contest the world had known.

Dangerous it was. In that very first race three competing sailors were lost after being washed overboard during storms. This led to the inevitable call for that inaugural contest to be the last, but the desire for unbridled adventure and great competition led to the race being staged every four years.

The re-badged Volvo Ocean Race was run for the first time in 2001-02. Today it is, quite simply, the ‘Everest of Sailing’.

During the nine months of the 2008-09 Volvo, which starts in Alicante, Spain in October 2008 and concludes in St Petersburg, Russia, during late June 2009, the teams will sail over 37,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Kochi, Singapore, Qingdao, around Cape Horn to Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg and Stockholm.

Each of the seven entries has a sailing team of 11 professional crew, and the race requires their utmost skills, physical endurance and competitive spirit as they race day and night for more than 30 days at a time on some of the legs. They will each take on different jobs onboard the boat and on top of these sailing roles, there will be two sailors that have had medical training, as well as a sailmaker, an engineer and a media specialist.

During the race the crews will experience life at the extreme: no fresh food is taken onboard so they live off freeze dried fare, they will experience temperature variations from -5 to +40 degrees Celsius and will only take one change of clothes. They will trust their lives to the boat and the skipper and experience hunger and sleep deprivation.

The race is the ultimate mix of world class sporting competition and on the edge adventure, a unique blend of onshore glamour with offshore drama and endurance.

It is undeniably the world’s premier global race and one of the most demanding team sporting events in the world.

Three more country launches for the 3G iPhone. India’s Bharti Airtel, Estonia’s EMT, and the Czech Republic’s Telefonica (NYSE: TEF) O2 all announced that they would begin selling the handsets on August 22. The three operators did not disclose any pricing of the phones or monthly tariffs. In India, Bharti Airtel isn’t the only iPhone carrier. Vodafone—which hasn’t revealed pricing or launch dates—will also be selling the phone. The two operators, however, will only be able to provide a limited service of the phone, as India does not yet have 3G networks up and running.

What is Traffic Rank?

What are sites and Web hosts?

What is Reach?

How Are Traffic Trend Graphs Calculated?

The Trend graph shows you a three-day moving average of the site's daily traffic rank, charted over time. The daily traffic rank reflects the traffic to the site based on data for a single day. In contrast, the main traffic rank shown in the Alexa Toolbar and elsewhere in the service is calculated from three months of aggregate traffic data.

Daily traffic rankings will sometimes benefit sites with sporadically high traffic, while the three-month traffic ranking benefits sites with consistent traffic over time. Since we feel that consistent traffic is a better indication of a site's value, we've chosen to use the three-month traffic rank to represent the site's overall popularity. The brainchild of Udi Manber of Google, it was announced on December 13, 2007 and was opened in beta to the public on July 23, 2008 with a few hundred articles mostly in the health and medical field.

The term knol, which Google defines as a "unit of knowledge", refers to both the project and an article in the project. F1 Car is made up of 80,000 components, if it were assembled 99.9% correctly, it would still start the race with 80 things wrong.

When an F1 driver hits the brakes on his car he experiences retardation or deceleration comparable to a regular car driving through a BRICK wall at 300kmph.

F1 car can go from 0 to 160 kph AND back to 0 in FOUR seconds.

F1 car engines last only for about 2 hours of racing mostly before blowing up on the other hand we expect our engines to last us for a decent 20yrs on an average and they quite faithfully DO....thats the extent to which the engines are pushed to perform.

An average F1 driver looses about 4kgs of weight after just one race due to the prolonged exposure to high G forces and temperatures for little over an hour (Yeah thats right!!!)

At 550kg a F1 car is less than half the weight of a Mini.

To give you an idea of just how important aerodynamic design and added down force can be, small planes can take off at slower speeds than F1 cars travel on the track.

Without aerodynamic down force, high-performance racing cars have sufficient power to produce wheel spin and loss of control at 160 kph. They usually race at over 300 kph.

In a street course race like the Monaco grand prix, the down force provides enough suction to lift manhole covers. Before the race all of the manhole covers on the streets have to be welded down to prevent this from happening!

The refuelers used in F1 can supply 12 liters of fuel per second. This means it would take just 4 seconds to fill the tank of an average 50 liter family car. They use the same refueling rigs used on US military helicopters today.

Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) is a type of programming added to php5 that makes building complex, modular and reusable web applications that much easier.
With the release of php5, php programmers finally had the power to code with the 'big boys'. Like Java and C#, php finally has a complete OOP infrastructure.

OOP is all about creating modular code, so our object oriented PHP code will be contained in dedicated files that we will then insert into our normal PHP page using php 'includes'.
OOP revolves around a construct called a 'class'. Classes are the cookie-cutters / templates that are used to define objects.

Instead of having a bunch of functions, variables and code floating around willy-nilly, to design your php scripts or code libraries the OOP way, you'll need to define/create your own classes.

PHP Programming Basics

This article is the first of a series of PHP guides that aim at teaching you the basics of PHP programming.

How to Install PHP On Windows

Well, first of all visit PHP Official Website and download Windows Binary Installation files. There are different versions of PHP the latest version is PHP 5.2.0 at the time of writing this article.

One more thing, you will see two kinds of Windows Binary files .zip and .exe I am going to follow .zip file installation as .exe will not install PHP as Apache module on Windows. So if you are going to follow this tutorial then download .zip file.

Now create a directory for your PHP installation typically on “C:\PHP”, and create a temporary directory, may be “C:\PHP\temp” to unzip the files. As we don’t need all the files included in the .zip archive for PHP installation so first we are going to unzip the files in the temporary directory that we just created and then we will copy only those files to main “C:\PHP” directory which are needed for PHP installation.

Now unzip the downloaded file to the temporary directory “C:\PHP\temp” and copy the following files to main PHP directory “C:\PHP”

php.exe
php5ts.dll
php5apache.dll
php5apache2.dll

the file names will differ according to the version of PHP you downloaded. Remember we need php5apcahe.dll if you want to run PHP with Apache 1.3 version and php5apache2.dll for Apache 2.x version so you can skip one of them. You can find these files in the temporary directory (where you unzipped the zip archive) under ’sapi’ folder.
Also if you want to use the different PHP extensions then copy files in extensions folder from temporary directory to main PHP directory though make sure your PHP is working fine before messing up with extensions’ installation.

Also MySQL is already enabled by now and you don’t need to do anything extra to enable it with PHP.

Now copy the php.ini-dist file to your Windows installation folder typically C:\WINDOWS and rename it to php.ini (remove -dist from the name)

Congratulations! you are done with the PHP installation on Windows

However, let me tell you some additional information about configuring PHP to fit to your needs and requirements.

PHP Configuration:

If you want to use posted variables with their direct names e.g $var1, $name etc then you need to switch on the Global Variables in the php.ini file that we just moved to Windows installation folder. Open the php.ini file with notepad and search for this line

register_globals = Off

change Off to On and you are done.

Remember if you will not turn it on then you would have to access your posted variables with the REQUEST GLOBAL ARRAY reference i.e $_REQUEST[’var1′] etc

Setting Up SMTP SERVER:

If you want to send emails from your local PC using your ISP then you need to set up your SMTP server in the php.ini file , search for this code

If you are terribly confused with this SMTP thing then don’t worry, You are a NEWBIE ! so just forget about it and once we are handling Mail in PHP then you will understand the need and use of SMTP server etc.
